I've not updated the Mountainboard Derby page in a while, but the Monday Night Sessions have still been rolling on, with somebody (me) out on the slopes every (most) Monday, rain or shine. Going back to the original rough plan of action, it was proposed that the formal sessions would carry on until late October when the clocks change and the light levels would prevent safe lessons to take place. Realistically though, if I'm able to get to a session for 7pm, at most we are getting an hour riding before last light, and this is only going to decrease as the nights draw in. Therefore, I'm taking the decision to cease the Monday Night Sessions as they currently stand. Lessons will still be provided on request although these will most probably take place at the weekends, or afternoon if I'm able to juggle work.
However, riding will still take place every Monday night where possible, but the shift will be to either the woods in Allestree or the occasional visit to Hemlock stone, or anywhere else people suggest. Bring your torches and keep an eye to the Mountainboard Derby Facebook Page for your most up-to-date information regarding riding plans. We hope to see you out there!
Mountainboard Derby
Next Monday Night Session: 6th August 2012
With summer sort of here,
the next Mountainboard Derby Monday Night Session will be held on
Monday 6th August at our
usual spot on
Darley Park, somewhere near the benches close to the top car park.
You may have seen the facebook message earlier this week? It shows a message from Derby City Council to say that they do intend to do works to sort out Darley Park once the weather gets a bit better.
Even so, Darley Park was running far better last week than it was a fortnight a go, so hopeful things should be fine tonight. We've had a bit of random rain early this morning so fingers crossed for a dry spell.
Ade will be there from 7(ish) for a couple of hours or so depending on who turns up. There may be more slightly earlier - check Facebook Derby for up-to-date details.
If you want to borrow any kit such as boards, helmets or pads or want to use the mini ramp, then give us a shout as equipment is available but limited.
Discussions regarding this session can be found as always on the Mountainboard Derby Facebook page.
Hope to see you down there, or get in touch if anyone is having a local mid-week session anywhere!

Maybe things will be better after the little bit of rain over the weekend so it's worth taking a look.

"Due to the very wet weather, then the Darley Park concert where 30,000 people churned up the ground, followed by the great weather over the past few days, the ground is now covered in hard ridges, lumps and general undulations. Not impossible to ride, but not the most fun either and far from the nice smooth carving hill that it was. I had a couple of runs and went up Allestree Park with Phill instead."

With this current run of 'not great weather but not bad weather either', the next Mountainboard Derby Monday Night Session will be held on
Monday 2nd July 2012 at our

Bearing in mind that the Darley Park Carnival took place at the weekend, lets hope that they have tidied up but it may be a very good idea to check the area for glass bottles etc before riding!

Week 10 Roundup
From my original plan, conceived way back at the start of the year - to ride Monday evenings as often as possible, seems to be going well so far.
The plan, to at least get me riding on a more regular basis has certainly worked with the wife and work automatically assuming that I am out on the hills every Monday evening unless told differently, and most of the local boarders (I think) know that I'll be probably there. Beginners get pointed in this direction and most people find the hill without any problems.
As a result of this, over the course of 10 weeks we've seen an average of 6 people riding per session with a huge 14 in mid May!
It's not always gone to plan as I'm not aware that anyone rode on the 21st May when I was away on holiday and the 11th June, a combination of rain, illness and an England football match meant that no-one turned up as far as I know.
On the 4th June, I was the only one out that evening. On this occasion, the original plan was reverted to: If no-one had pre-booked a lesson, no interest had been shown on Facebook and no-one showed between 7.30 and 7.45, then I could guilt-free go and ride whatever I liked - on this occasion, Allestree Woods.
And so far, the thought that lighter evenings + better weather = more people using Darley Park = more people taking an interest, seems to be proving correct. Last Monday for example went very well with two boarders turning up without even knowing we existed, loads of youngsters asking about what we were doing and how much boards were, plus we had one lad who had a go and turned out to be pretty good already. As the weather gets better and the summer holidays start, hopefully things will get even busier.
A summary of numbers so far might help:
So, then plan from now on in? I said from the outset that I would give this project in its current form until the end of British Summer Time, October 26th. Riding after this time is usually too dark to give beginner lessons safely, and if we're riding in the dark out of sight of the public, then it might as well be anywhere - freeriding Allestree Woods probably. I'll just reserve the right not to be there every week!
However, this still gives 4 months; 12 whole Monday evenings to go - we're not even half way yet! And so, because of the good numbers attending thus far, it is growing to be far more than just me out every Monday. So, I'd appreciate any feedback, should any feel vocal enough. Primarily, if you've been before, what went well (WWW) and where could there be room for improvement (RFI)?
Hopefully, nothing too bad because ultimately it is supposed to be fun and if others are enjoying it too, then so much the better. If we can take the best parts of having a club - communication, knowledge, shared fun, etc. without the usual bad parts of being in a club - commitment, responsibility, politics etc. then we can all get on with the best part - mountainboarding.
So, yeah, feedback, if relevant would be great. I'm not changing the day though. Want a different night? Start your own club ;-D
